Biography
Horcelie Sinda Wa Mbongo was born in Kinshasa, Congo and moved to London in 2004. She is yet to obtain her post-graduate degree at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in Contemporary Art. She holds a Bachelor degree at Chelsea College of Art and Foundation degree in Fine Painting at Central Saint Martins.
Sinda’s work explores the influence of Christianity, African Spirituality and Identity in the Congo, DRC. She began her exploration of identity through the medium of photography and drawing whilst in college. She incorporates other mediums such as thread and fabric, to explore the relationship between the self and Yahweh. Through photography, she continues her search of the interrelation of the sublime, time and belief. Using mixed media in her practice expands the notion of representing one’s spiritual experience and art. Sinda also works with found images of Black people to assemble the past and present of African history.
Horcelie is Contributing writer at Made in Bed Magazine, writing to expand the discussion of African art. She is a devoted servant of God, serving at Ebenezer Evangelical Church.
Advocacy
She is the founder of Lobiko, a charity working between Democratic Republic of Congo and the United Kingdom. Her advocacy work focuses on African health and improving the Congolese economy. She also volunteers internationally and nationally to support rural and urban sustainable development goals in Africa. She is a public speaker and presenter.
